A PICNIC IN THE DUST STORM WITH TWO PEOPLE I MET AT THE BRISBANE WRITER’S FESTIVAL

September 24th 2009 14:37

As the title of this post implies, I had a picnic in the dust storm with two people I met at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival. For those of you who don’t know, Brisbane was hit by a sandstorm yesterday, blanketing everything pretty much yellow. I woke up and saw something like this:

dust storm

One of the guys with me was an African poet who wanted to be called McRice and the other was this guy whose eyes were too wide for my liking.

I’d always wanted to be friends with other writers. Every time I’d read or watch about famous artists, they’d always talk about how these famous artists hung out with fellow writers and musicians and painters and poets in bars and small rooms and got drunk and high together; there was some kind of romanticised adventure to it all.

We laid the picnic mat down and brought out the beers, but after a few seconds I couldn't take the dust.

“That’s it,” I told McRice and the guy with big eyes. “I can’t move anymore there’s too much dust, man, it’s getting into my eyes and mouth and I can actually taste the dust.” I squinted, pointing at the guy with big eyes. “I feel so sorry for you.”

We rushed back to our cars and drove home.

Poor McRice and wide-eyes - hahahahahahaha

We copped it bad in Sydney! But what I couldn't understand was the beaches were full of people. I am still coughing up red crap, it could be my lung but am pretty sure it's dust. Why of why would people actively seek to sit on the beach while getting layered in red dust?

I did a post of pics yesterday (forgive my shameless self promotion) but if you want to suss out the pics clickety click HERE

Honestly, it must be one of the most interesting (Or irritating) picnic that you've ever had in your life, isn't it?

Hey guys,

Thanks for commenting!

Hahaha. If you haven't already heard, the dust storm came back again on Saturday night. I was driving to a friend's place from the city; I had to keep my windows shut and the aircon off to stop any dust from coming in. It was incredibly hot. It was the longest drive of my life.

Lara: Yes, I have been back for some time
