A SINGLE MAN

January 19th 2011 07:20

“I’ve done it,” the receptionist said over the phone. “I’ve broken up with him. I’m officially no longer engaged.”

“Whoop-dee-fuckin’ doo!”

To celebrate, we drove around and found a house to watch a movie in. There were a number of artsy university students there, all with thick-framed glasses and swept hair and tight pants. They were drinking beers and smoking and eating chips and watching A Single Man on a large screen TV. The receptionist and I arrived right in time to see the scene where Colin Firth’s character was gazing at a gigolo’s lips.

“This film is beautiful,” a girl said.

“Colin firth is beautiful,” another girl said. “He’s so natural and charming. And the Spanish guy is totally hot.”

“Yes,” someone said. Everyone waited for him to say something beyond “yes” but that was it.

The receptionist and I walked out of the room and found some seats. She had big eyes, shortish hair. She smiled.

“If you kiss me, it’ll be the end of you.”

“I’m already dead,” I said, putting my hand on her.

“That’s awfully grim of you to say that. When did you die?”

I checked my watch. “Um, around six?”

She moved closer to me. “Well, I died at five.”

“Morning, or afternoon?”

“Does it matter?”

“It matters a lot, because I died in the morning.”

"Hang on," she said, acting surprised and grabbing my arm. “I died in the morning, too.”

“We’re both victims of the morning. The hell does this say about you and me?”

She shrugged. “I want to cut your hair, Dean.”

“Then cut it.”

“Really?”

I ran my fingers through my hair. “Sure.” We were terribly close now. There was a part of me that told me not to make a move; her fiancé or ex-fiancé or whatever the hell he's called is a cop, an angry looking cop. But that part of me soon vanished; I could smell her perfume; I could already imagine tasting its bitterness on her neck. One of the things in this world I love the most is being close to someone, being close to someone I’d never been close to before. I ran my fingers over hers. Her engagement ring had been replaced by another sort of ring, a ring with a jagged black oval-shaped stone.
