BRISBANE WRITERS FESTIVAL 2008
September 8th 2008 02:04
Once again, Brisbane is holding another Brisbane Writer's Festival. I’ll definitely be attending the “How to get Published” workshop and, if I don’t pay a few bills this month, I’ll be able to join the Queensland Writer’s Centre.
A lot of people dream of being writers. I remember this guy in high school who’d write hip-hop lyrics. He’d rap it out in front of his friends during lunch and they’d all laugh when he’d rhyme dirty, when he’d spit about how he was going to have sex with everyone’s mum, how he was going to do the principal’s face. Once, during graduation practice, he came in late, smelling like weed. “You smell like weed,” one of the boys said.
“Like shit I do.”
The last time I saw him was at the post-formal party. We were sitting by the backyard, drunk, with a bunch of other people. They were also drunk.
He wore a baggy jumper and his hair was cut shorter than usual. He put his arm around my shoulders. He didn’t look at me, he looked nowhere. He told me, “Dean…” He said, “Dean…” And that’s all I remember.
He's overseas now, in prison.
Vicki bought me a ticket to the Science Centre the other day. I looked at the ticket. “Are you kidding?”
She grinned. “We’ll have fun. Trust me.”
In the end, it was actually fun. They have this machine that records how fast you throw a basketball at it. I spent half an hour just pegging the ball at it, making it rattle like a crazy man.
“Why are you so nice to me?” I asked her at the end of it all. “I’m a damn mess.”
She looked away, shrugged, smiled. I smiled too.
The Brisbane Writer’s Festival goes from the 17th – 21st of September. The website is here.
