KATE HUDSON WAS IN BRISBANE

Connor rang me up from a Queensland University of Technology payphone, drunk, sunglasses probably on, telling me that a Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey film, Fool’s Gold, was being shot in the garden in front of him. He said that there was a giant anchor placed in the Kidney Lawn, and that it reminded him of the word gash.
Connor told me that Matthew McConaughey had long hair, a hippy shirt on, and an incredible tan. Connor told me that he wished he had an incredible tan too, rather than his average tan, which he admitted was partially fake. Connor told me that there were a whole bunch of extras who were walking back and forth, back and forth in the heat. There were even extras on roller blades. Connor told me that there was an incredibly hot extra who wore a red dress, and he wondered what time she slept, what she had for breakfast last Sunday. Connor told me that they were spending a week shooting the movie in QUT, twelve hours a day, to shoot a four minute scene.
Connor wanted to know what it would be like to be friends with Kate Hudson. Would she have much time to spend with him, or would she always be busy shooting films? How would he know whether her doings are sincere, or merely an act? After all, isn’t she a great actress? How would she know whether his actions are sincere, or merely an act? Would she add him on MySpace? Would he be one of her top friends? Would she introduce him to Matthew McConaughey? Who would she call first, when inviting everyone out to watch a movie? Would she call him first? Would everyone understand that they are merely friends, and nothing else? Or would a male female friendship be too complex for the media? Would he get to see her nipples? What colour would her nipples be? Would she only want rich friends? Would she like his sunglasses, the style of his shirt? Would she mention him on E Insider interviews? Would she add him on her MSN Messenger contacts list? Would she block him? Would she take him for drives, listen to music with him, have a few laughs, go for more drives?
Connor said, Hang on, I’ll put more coins in this machine. He put more coins in, and told someone in the background that he’ll be talking on the phone for a while, so go find another one. Connor asked me, What if Matthew McConaughey would be a better friend than Kate Hudson ever would be? What if his friendship with her was wasted? What if he ultimately would have received more laughs, more Deep and Meaningfuls, more growth with a friend like Matthew McConaughey? Connor told me that Matthew McConaughey was pretty good looking, but he’d rather be intimate with Kate Hudson, or maybe even Britney Spears or that chick from Splash. Connor said that he didn’t know how to spell Matthew McConaughey.
Connor stopped talking for around 5 minutes, and then finally: I think Jacob’s dead. He said no one has heard from him. He told me that he doesn’t think that Jacob’s in Canberra. He told me that he always liked Jacob, and that he’s biting his nails even though they’re now extremely short. Connor told me that he misses Jacob so much and told me he felt bad for dumping him. He told me that only Kate Hudson would understand. He asked me what I reckon Kate Hudson would think if she saw him cry.
Connor told me that his old sunglasses broke, so now he’s wearing new strangers.
Connor spoke to someone in the background, a voice I don’t want to admit I recognise. The voice was a mumble, a shy plea. Connor stopped talking for a moment, and I felt him nod. Connor said, I have to go. Take care. He left the phone hanging and walked away. I heard wind in the background.
