RETURN TO BRISBANE
September 22nd 2009 01:34
I walked out of the Gold Coast airport feeling incredibly hot. There was a skinny Santa Claus standing next to a fat woman in a green fairy costume. She smiled at me and gave me a piece of candy.
Jude and Vail were there, waiting for me. As usual, Jude looked suspicious about something.
“Don’t worry about him, Dean,” Vail whispered. “He’s been popping again.”
When returning from grand holidays, you often feel like you’ve changed. You make little promises to yourself upon returning home, like “I’ll return next year” and “From now on I won’t be a prick” and “From now on I’ll be this certain way” and “From now on I’ll do this,” but the problem is, no one else can relate to you. You try to convince everyone of a better attitude, but after a month or so you’ll realise you’ve once again become your normal self. You’ve done your road trip but everyone else has stayed behind.
“You know in Japan,” I told Vail in the car, “they make sure visitors get the best seat in the dinner table?”
“Guess what," Vail said, "you should’ve come to Matt’s eighties party last Saturday night. I got, like, so, trashed.”
Jude scowled. “Dean, your accent’s changed.”
The trip home was slow. It was conversations about who got drunk on what night, who added who on Facebook, who blocked who on Facebook, who was going to what concert, who tried to commit suicide, who was so funny, who has a druggo boyfriend, who got busted, who didn’t get busted, who got fired, who got a job. It was constantly changing the radio station. Jude had somehow forgotten that he was angry with me before I left for Japan.
We finally reached my home. Vail gave me a hug, Jude gave me a hug. They were both wearing sunglasses and they were both chewing gum. I was sweating.
“Dean,” Vail frowned. “You’ve lost your tan.”
I thanked them for the lift and watched them drive away.

Anyway, I was just thanking you for visiting my site and for agreeing with me, as I don't get agreements too often
Yes, I decided to end my journey with words from a Japanese Englishman. I suppose it's hard to separate holidays from just being holidays - we can't escape ourselves and our routines forever.
I'm still yet to see Hong Kong. I have a feeling I'll be visiting it within the next few years!
